Reforms Ensuring Supreme Court's Integrity and Democratic Legitimacy

To: Rep. D'Esposito, Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A verified voter in Valley Stream, NY

July 29, 2024

Biden's proposed reforms to the Supreme Court are grounded in restoring public trust and integrity in one of our nation's most vital institutions. Establishing 18-year term limits for justices would make the nomination process more regular and predictable, preventing the current arbitrary nature of vacancies. A binding ethics code requiring financial disclosure, recusal for conflicts of interest, and prohibiting political activities is essential to ensure impartiality on the bench. Amending the Constitution to clarify that presidents are not immune from indictment upholds the foundational principle that no one is above the law. These measured steps align with democratic norms and would bolster faith in the Court's independence and commitment to equal justice. At a time when confidence in public institutions is wavering, these overdue reforms are critically needed to preserve the Supreme Court's legitimacy and continued role as a trusted arbiter of the law.
