Accountability Must Be Preserved For All Government

To: Sen. Schatz, Rep. Case, Sen. Hirono

From: A constituent in Ewa Beach, HI

November 21

Dear Senator / Representative, I am writing to Hawaiʻi’s congressional leadership because I know you see what is happening. The erosion of accountability, the manipulation of the justice system, and the use of government power to shield one individual from the law are not invisible. The American people see it, and so do you. We understand that immediate consequences for Donald Trump may not be legally possible, yet. But if consequences must wait until Trump is no longer in power, then Congress must make it unmistakably clear that those who abuse authority at his direction will be held responsible when lawful conditions permit. Silence or inaction sends the message that loyalty to power outweighs loyalty to the Constitution. This also raises a critical question: can the Supreme Court itself be brought under meaningful legal and ethical scrutiny? Recent decisions have given the appearance of expanding protections and immunities in ways that benefit Trump and weaken the ability to enforce accountability. Whether intentional or not, this has fostered a growing perception that the Court is enabling him rather than safeguarding democratic balance. If trust in the judiciary is to survive, then transparency and oversight must extend even to the highest institution in the land. Even from Hawaiʻi, where our influence can often feel limited within the broader structure of federal power, your role still matters. Representation is not symbolic, it is a duty. Your voices, your votes, and your insistence on oversight help shape the conditions for accountability, even when immediate action feels out of reach. This moment demands more than observation. It demands preparation, documentation, oversight, and the formal groundwork to ensure that those who violated the law, enabled corruption, or carried out unlawful directives will not escape accountability simply because of timing or political protection. The public is not asking for spectacle or vengeance. We are asking for the consistent application of the law and for clear, principled leadership that prioritizes democracy over political convenience. History will not judge words. It will judge action.
