Grave concern over illegal deportation

To: Sen. Collins, Sen. King, Rep. Pingree

From: A constituent in South Portland, ME

April 15

I write to you with grave concern regarding the Trump administration’s illegal deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was wrongfully removed to El Salvador despite a 2019 immigration judge’s order protecting him from such removal. This deportation was not only an administrative error but a blatant violation of due process and the rule of law.   Mr. Abrego Garcia, a legal resident and father of three, was deported on March 15, 2025, and subsequently imprisoned in a maximum-security Salvadoran prison without any charges against him. The Trump administration has admitted this was an “administrative error” yet has refused to comply with multiple court orders, including a unanimous 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court ruling mandating his immediate return to the United States. The administration’s defiance of the judiciary, including ignoring the Supreme Court’s directive and falsely labeling Mr. Abrego Garcia as a terrorist without evidence, represents a dangerous disregard for constitutional checks and balances.   We’re supposed to be the good guys, the shining city on a hill, the country the world emulates for implemented rule of law and justice. What the administration has done, disappearing a human to another country’s barbaric prison, is despicable, and lowers the U.S. to the level of uncivilized totalitarian regimes. This result appears to have been intended.   This case exemplifies a broader pattern of unconstitutional immigration actions under the Trump administration, undermining the rights of immigrants and legal residents alike. The refusal to bring Mr. Abrego Garcia back not only endangers his life but erodes public trust in our justice system and immigration enforcement.   I urge Congress to take immediate action to:             •           Demand the Trump administration comply fully with the Supreme Court’s order and facilitate Mr. Abrego Garcia’s safe return without further delay.             •           Investigate and hold accountable those responsible for this illegal deportation and the subsequent refusal to correct it.             •           Enact stronger safeguards to prevent such egregious violations of immigration law and constitutional rights in the future.   The rule of law must be upheld, and no individual should be subjected to unlawful deportation or indefinite detention without due process. I trust you will act decisively to rectify this injustice and protect the constitutional rights of all residents.
