Enough Is Enough: Stand Up for Federal Employees and Defend Our Institutions
To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt, Rep. Cleaver, Pres. Trump
From: A constituent in Lees Summit, MO
October 8
I am writing as a constituent to express serious concern about the continued restructuring of the federal government and the treatment of career federal employees under the current administration. The September 24, 2026 interview with OMB Director Russell Vought is particularly concerning. In discussing the administration’s approach to the federal bureaucracy, Vought described OMB as having authority over every decision involving government wide execution and stated that the administration intends to use OMB to exert greater control over the federal bureaucracy. He also described the administration’s effort to ensure that the President is truly in charge rather than allowing career bureaucrats to operate independently. Those statements deserve serious congressional scrutiny. Career federal employees are not the enemy of the American people. They are the people who administer Social Security, process veterans’ benefits, protect food and workplace safety, enforce federal law, maintain our national infrastructure, conduct scientific research, collect taxes, and provide countless other services Americans depend upon every day. Congress should be concerned when efforts to restructure the federal government result in the loss of experienced career employees and the weakening of the institutions responsible for delivering those services. The Government Accountability Office reported that nearly 378,000 federal employees separated from government service during 2025, while approximately 127,000 were hired. Most agencies experienced workforce declines greater than 10 percent, with some experiencing declines greater than 30 percent. The administration’s policies involving the federal workforce also directly involve OMB Director Russell Vought and OPM Director Scott Kupor. Their actions and proposals regarding the restructuring and consolidation of federal human resources systems deserve meaningful congressional oversight. I am asking you to take your constitutional oversight responsibilities seriously. Please scrutinize the actions of Russell Vought, Scott Kupor, OMB, OPM, and other administration officials when those actions affect federal agencies, career civil servants, collective bargaining rights, staffing levels, and the government’s ability to provide essential services. Federal employees deserve to be treated as professionals who serve the American public, not as political obstacles to be removed. I also expect you to listen to the federal employees and other constituents who are directly affected by these policies. Congressional representation should include meaningful oversight of executive actions regardless of which political party controls the White House.
