Stand against the proposed Starwood data center

To: Sen. Walsh, Rep. Osienski

From: A constituent in Newark, DE

August 12

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed 6-million-square-foot data center by Starwood Digital Ventures in Delaware City. While I understand the appeal of economic development and job creation, this project raises serious concerns about environmental sustainability, public health, and community well-being. According to recent reports, the data center would consume up to 1.2 gigawatts of energy—an enormous strain on our regional power grid. This level of demand could drive up electricity costs for residents and businesses alike, exacerbating financial burdens for working families in our area. Equally troubling is the projected water usage. Data centers of this scale can consume millions of gallons of purified water daily for cooling purposes. This would place immense pressure on our local water supply, potentially impacting availability and affordability for households and small businesses. The lack of clarity from company representatives around water sourcing, treatment, and discharge only deepens my concern. Noise pollution is another overlooked issue. Residents living within two miles of similar facilities have reported persistent low-frequency noise from cooling systems, which can negatively affect sleep, mental health, and wildlife. Finally, I am disappointed by the lack of transparency and accountability from the developers. At the recent town hall, representatives failed to provide clear answers to basic questions about energy costs, water usage, and local labor commitments. This lack of responsiveness erodes public trust and suggests that community interests are not being prioritized. I urge you to advocate against this proposal and support a more sustainable, community-centered approach to development. We need responsible infrastructure that enhances our quality of life.
