Uphold promises to Afghan allies, extend TPS protections

To: Pres. Trump, Sen. Hoeven, Sen. Cramer, Rep. Fedorchak

May 14

The decision to terminate temporary protected status (TPS) for thousands of Afghans in the United States is a deeply concerning move that puts our Afghan allies at risk of deportation. These are individuals who bravely aided U.S. efforts during the war in Afghanistan, often risking their lives to support American troops and national security interests. By revoking their TPS protections, we are failing to uphold the promises made to those who stood with us. The reasoning provided by the Department of Homeland Security, that conditions in Afghanistan no longer meet the statutory requirements for TPS, is difficult to accept given the well-documented turmoil and instability plaguing the country under Taliban rule. Taliban forces continue to target those perceived as having ties to the U.S. government, making it perilous for our Afghan allies to return. Many of these individuals have already gone through extensive vetting processes and proven their dedication to supporting American efforts in Afghanistan. Terminating their TPS status undermines the commitments made to leave no allies behind and casts doubt on America's credibility as a nation that stands by its partners. I urge you to reconsider this harmful decision and extend TPS protections for our Afghan allies. They stood with us during times of conflict, and we have a moral obligation to ensure their safety and ability to rebuild their lives in the United States without the threat of deportation looming. Abandoning these brave individuals would be a stain on our nation's values.
