Oppose Bill HSB 187 - Protects Civil Liberties

To: Gov. Reynolds, Rep. Andrews, Sen. Blake

HSB 187 is a deeply concerning bill that would enable law enforcement agencies in Iowa to participate in harmful and discriminatory federal immigration programs, leading to racial profiling of legitimate US citizens, which is illegal. This legislation threatens the civil liberties and safety of immigrant communities across the state. By empowering local police to assist in federal immigration enforcement, it creates an environment of fear and mistrust that undermines public safety. Immigrant families will be less likely to report crimes or cooperate with authorities out of fear of detention and deportation. Furthermore, this bill promotes racial profiling and disproportionately impacts communities of color. Iowa should be a welcoming state that upholds the rights of all residents, regardless of immigration status. HSB 187 runs counter to American values of justice, equality, and human dignity. I urge you to oppose this misguided legislation and instead focus efforts on policies that strengthen trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Protecting civil rights and ensuring public safety should be priorities over assisting with controversial federal deportation efforts that tear families apart. Vote no on HSB 187.
