Protect NCAR and Block Its Dismantling

To: Sen. King, Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree

From: A constituent in South Portland, ME

December 22

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to protect the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. The administration has announced plans to dismantle NCAR through budgetary and organizational actions. Congress has clear authority here. NCAR exists and operates through federal appropriations, and Congress can prevent its dissolution. I ask that you: 1 Maintain full funding for NCAR in FY 2026 appropriations 2 Prohibit the use of federal funds to dismantle, disperse, or reorganize NCAR 3 Require explicit congressional approval before any closure or breakup of the center 4 Support oversight hearings on the public-safety and national-interest impacts of this action NCAR plays a critical role in weather forecasting, extreme-event modeling, and atmospheric research that supports disaster preparedness nationwide. Allowing it to be dismantled without congressional approval would set a dangerous precedent and risk real harm. Please use your authority to ensure NCAR remains intact and operational.
