Please respond to this existential threat to our country

To: Rep. Clarke, Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY

January 20

I often feel helpless to ask Congress to stand up to President Trump since all of my representatives are Democrats. I know that Republicans currently hold all of the majorities, and the Democratic Party is limited on what they can do to stop his actions. But I am writing to you nonetheless to implore you to please do everything you can. I am shocked and appalled at the complete inaction of Congress in protecting the powers assigned to them in the separation of powers in our government. President Trump has repeatedly violated the separation of powers related both to the declarations of war and the control of the country’s purse strings. And now, in defiance of all logic and sanity, he has informed the Prime Minister of Norway that not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize (an award over which the government of Norway has no control) means he is even more determined to take control of Greenland from Denmark (a country he appears not to fully understand is distinct and separate from Norway) because he claims there are no documents that confer control of Greenland to Denmark (a provably false claim). In any sane world, his actions prior to now would have led to impeachment, and his most recent delusional statements would have triggered a 25th amendment removal from office. It is clear that his cabinet will never allow a 25th amendment process to take place, because his power protects them from their own actions. And I have little faith that 2/3 of the Senate would vote for conviction even if the House could successfully impeach. But something must be done. I beg of you to please, first, raise your voices as loudly as you can about what is happening. It often feels like our leadership is being too quiet and deferential to process over the clear existential threat facing our country. And second, please do everything you can to communicate with your colleagues across the aisle and get them to understand this is no longer about party, it is about country, and what is happening is not in their best interests either.
