The House recently passed a provision to automatically register young men between ages 18-26 for the Selective Service, essentially reinstating a military draft. While intended to make the system more efficient, this measure strips away the civil liberty of choosing whether to register. The draft is an immoral, coercive institution that deprives individuals of their freedom. An all-volunteer military demonstrates our nation's strength by allowing citizens to decide when and why to serve. Conscription, even if made more "equitable," remains a tool of unjustified force violating personal liberties. I urge you to reject this provision and instead abolish the Selective Service System entirely, preserving the voluntary choice to defend our nation's values.
