The unlawful detention of the 11 activists on board the Madleen ship by Israeli forces in international waters is a clear violation of international law and their human rights. These individuals were simply carrying out a peaceful act of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza by attempting to deliver humanitarian aid amid the ongoing illegal blockade. They pose no threat and should be released immediately without charges. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has engaged in over 15 years of efforts to raise awareness and break the inhumane blockade on Gaza through non-violent civil resistance on the high seas. Israel has repeatedly demonstrated its disregard for maritime law by intercepting, attacking and illegally detaining activists and crew in these scenarios. This unlawful behavior cannot continue to occur with impunity. Israel's air, land and naval blockade of Gaza, now in its 16th year, amounts to collective punishment of 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. It has devastated the economy, restricted freedom of movement, and caused a humanitarian catastrophe. As UN members, we have a legal obligation to act to stop this ongoing situation recognized as genocide under international law. Sanctions and an arms embargo must be implemented. The arbitrary detention of the Madleen activists is the latest injustice resulting from the international community's inaction on Gaza. Releasing them immediately and lifting the blockade are critical first steps to upholding international law and human rights for Palestinians. Allowing this illegal, deadly policy to continue enables further suffering and violence.
