Pass legislation to ban automated license plate reader (ALPR) mass surveillance in our state. These systems don't just catch stolen cars — they build a searchable record of everywhere every driver goes, fed into databases that police, ICE, and private vendors can query at will. That's not a tool that can be fixed with better policy. The mass collection is the harm. ALPRs have been used to stalk women, arrest innocent drivers due to system errors, surveil protesters, and hand location data to federal immigration enforcement. There is no configuration of this technology that eliminates those risks, because the risk is the surveillance itself. Other states and cities have already said no to ALPR contracts — this state can too. At minimum, any existing systems must face strict data deletion deadlines and a warrant requirement before any search of stored plate data. I want to see a bill that does exactly that.
