I am writing to demand a fundamental shift in how public officials answer to the people who elect them. When public policies fail, infrastructure crumbles, or corporate interests override community safety, politicians routinely engage in a dangerous pattern of deflecting blame onto their own constituents. This shifting of responsibility undermines public trust and shields elected officials from the consequences of their own legislative choices.
I urge you to draft, sponsor, and support The Political Accountability and Anti-Deflection Act, a comprehensive piece of accountability legislation built on three core requirements:
1 Independent Impact Reporting: Require independent, non-partisan assessments for all major infrastructure and economic policy shifts. If a public official publicly blames constituent behavior for a crisis that independent data proves was caused by legislative or corporate negligence, it must be logged as an official ethics violation.
2 All-Ages Public Grievance Mandate: Establish a legal mechanism where a constituent petition forces an immediate, unscripted, public town hall. This forum must be legally open to constituents of all ages, ensuring that the youth who inherit the long-term consequences of political decisions have a direct, face-to-face platform to hold leaders accountable.
3 Structural Consequences for Deflection: Implement strict legislative penalties for officials found to be using their office to shield corporate entities by scapegoating the public, including the automatic stripping of committee assignments and the freezing of discretionary public relations funding.
Constituents are not a shield for political failure. Your job is to serve the public, take responsibility for the outcomes of your votes, and face your community with total transparency. I expect you to champion this legislation to restore true accountability to our government.
