The SAVE Act poses a grave threat to the fundamental right to vote and the integrity of our democratic system. By imposing unprecedented barriers to voter registration and participation, this legislation would disenfranchise millions of eligible citizens - disproportionately impacting women, people of color, rural voters, and those with disabilities. Requiring documentary proof of citizenship presented in person is an unnecessary and burdensome requirement that fails to address any real issue of electoral fraud, which is exceedingly rare. Instead, it creates a de facto poll tax, obstructing access to the ballot box for marginalized communities who may lack easy access to certain documents. Furthermore, criminalizing the inadvertent mistakes of election officials and restricting mail voting undermine the smooth administration of elections. Preserving the right of all eligible citizens to cast their ballots freely is essential for a healthy democracy. I urge you to reject this pernicious legislation and uphold the sacred principles of equal access, political participation, and self-governance that are the bedrock of our nation.
