Dear Members of Congress,
I am writing to you out of deep concern regarding the conduct and accountability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in our communities.
There have been numerous reports and personal accounts of ICE agents apprehending individuals—many of whom are legal residents—without proper identification, uniforms, or visible badge numbers. These agents are often dressed in plain clothes, operating unmarked vehicles, and failing to clearly identify themselves, even when approached. This behavior is not only unprofessional but deeply frightening and dangerous.
Without a uniform, badge, or clear indication that someone is a federal officer, how is a person supposed to know they aren’t being kidnapped? The lack of transparency and accountability is unacceptable. Any law enforcement officer—federal, state, or local—should be held to the same standards when it comes to identification, professionalism, and due process.
The ability to detain individuals must come with strict safeguards to ensure the public’s safety and trust. ICE should not be an exception. These actions put everyone at risk, especially immigrants who may already be scared or unfamiliar with their rights. Legal residents should not have to fear being taken off the street by unidentified agents. No one should.
I urge you to support legislation and oversight that requires ICE agents to:
• Wear clearly marked uniforms when conducting operations in public.
• Display badge numbers and official identification at all times.
• Operate in a way that protects civil liberties and due process.
This is not just about immigration—it is about basic human rights, public safety, and the integrity of our law enforcement institutions.
Thank you for your time and for your service to our country. I hope you will stand up for justice and accountability by demanding higher standards from ICE.
