Urgent Legislative Action Needed to Block DOGE Overreach

To: Sen. Peters, Rep. Barrett, Sen. Slotkin

From: A constituent in Hartland, MI

May 3

I am writing to express my deep alarm at the news that the Trump administration has petitioned the Supreme Court to allow the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk, to access the Social Security Administration’s systems and obtain the personal data of millions of Americans. Let me be clear: DOGE is an out-of-control, unaccountable entity that has no constitutional legitimacy. Its repeated overreach, reckless behavior, and lack of oversight have already demonstrated that it poses a clear and present danger to American privacy, civil liberties, and the rule of law. Handing over sensitive, deeply personal data, data Americans never consented to share with private third parties, to an erratic billionaire with no mandate and no accountability is not just irresponsible. It is dangerous. It’s an affront to everything this country stands for. Congress has the power to stop this. You must use it. I urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to do your damn jobs. Enact emergency legislation that strips DOGE of any authority to access Social Security data or other government systems. Investigate its activities. Shut it down. Our democracy, our privacy, and our rights are not bargaining chips. This is not a partisan issue. This is about basic constitutional order and the protection of the American people from unlawful surveillance, data mining, and authoritarian overreach. We are watching. We are paying attention. And we expect action, not silence.
