Congress Must Demand Truthful Use of Extremism Data from the Vice President

To: Rep. Carbajal, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Pres. Trump

From: A verified voter in Lompoc, CA

September 15, 2025

I write to urge Congress to scrutinize and hold Vice President Vance accountable for his recent statements blaming the “radical left” for political violence, particularly following the killing of Charlie Kirk. These claims are at odds with the best available evidence. Key Facts & Evidence: • The Anti-Defamation League, in its 2023 and 2024 reports, found that all tracked extremist-related murders were committed by far-right extremists. (ADL 2023-24 data) • The Department of Homeland Security’s latest Homeland Threat Assessments consistently rate white supremacist and racially-motivated violent extremists—primarily right-wing actors—as the most persistent and lethal domestic threat. • A 2025 congressional document shows that over 80% of extremist-related fatalities in recent mass shootings and extremist incidents have been tied to white supremacists or other right-wing extremist actors. • Independent researchers (CSIS, academic studies) demonstrate that right-wing extremist plots and violence have been more frequent and more deadly than those from the far left. Why This Matters: • When the Vice President claims left-wing extremism is the greater threat, without evidence, it misleads the public and misallocates federal resources. • It also fosters polarization and undermines trust in fact-based policy decisions on domestic extremism. What Congress Should Do: 1. Request detailed evidence from the Vice President / White House supporting his claims that left-wing violence currently poses the primary threat. 2. Require transparency of the data underlying any federal initiatives that target nongovernmental groups for alleged political violence. 3. Ensure policymaking is driven by rigorous analysis, using reports from DHS, ADL, CSIS, GAO, etc., rather than by rhetorical claims. Congress has both the power and the responsibility to ensure that national security and domestic peace are pursued based on facts, not fear or political posturing. I urge you to demand that the Vice President correct his narrative and align it with evidence.
