Protect Trans Citizens From Second-Class Legal Status

To: Rep. Walberg, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

July 13

Transgender people in this country are being stripped of basic rights in real time, and I need you to act. Four states — Florida, Idaho, Kansas, and Texas — now carry "Do Not Travel" designations for trans people. Idaho's felony bathroom ban carries up to a 5-year prison sentence. These aren't abstract policy debates. These are criminal penalties targeting people for existing in public. The situation for trans youth is worse. No state in the country can be considered low-risk for transgender young people right now. Executive orders have halted nonprofit services, imposed federal healthcare bans, and put teachers under threat of investigation for using a student's chosen name. A recent Supreme Court Title IX ruling is pushing even protective states toward anti-trans policies. This is what second-class citizenship looks like. I want to know where you stand, and I want you to use every tool available to you — legislation, oversight, public statements — to push back against these laws and orders. Trans people are your constituents too.
