Restore Federal LGBTQ+ Data Collection Now

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Walberg

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

September 4

Restore sexual orientation and gender identity questions to federal surveys. The Trump administration's decision to strip SOGI data from hundreds of federal forms is not just a bureaucratic choice — it's an attempt to erase a population that makes up 12% of American adults, according to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's analysis of 2.45 million Census Bureau responses. These numbers are not fringe. One in 43 American adults identifies as transgender or gender-expansive. Nearly one in three adults under 25 identifies as LGBTQ+. LGBTQ+ people represent more than 10% of the adult population in 40 states plus D.C. You represent constituents who are part of this community whether you see them or not. History will not be kind to officials who looked at a growing, visible, undeniable population and chose to make them statistically invisible. LGBTQ+ equality is not a future possibility — it's a present reality. The question is whether you'll be on record defending the data that proves it.
