Oppose Section 702 Reauthorization Without Constitutional Safeguards

To: Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand, Rep. Stefanik

From: A constituent in Fort Edward, NY

April 18

I'm asking you to oppose any reauthorization of Section 702 of FISA unless it includes major reforms to protect constitutional rights. The current program allows mass, warrantless surveillance of Americans' communications and must not continue as is. Section 702 was never meant to target Americans, yet the government has been doing exactly that for years through the backdoor search loophole. Intelligence agencies search through collected data for Americans' emails, texts, and calls without a warrant. The program has virtually no meaningful judicial oversight, and the government has deliberately hidden its true scope from the public. Any renewal must close the backdoor search loophole, prohibit mass searching of Americans' communications, and require warrants before accessing their data. It must also narrow the program's overbroad scope, limit how long information can be retained, and ensure people can challenge this surveillance in court. Given our nation's history of surveillance abuse against activists, journalists, and minority communities, these safeguards are essential. Without these reforms, Section 702 should sunset. Vote no on any reauthorization that fails to include them.
