Please treat the AI crisis with real urgency. The time to act is now, and we need slow down and regulate the AI race that is currently speeding toward disastrous disruption. Among the much needed measures that are needed are 1) legislation like H.R. 9917, the AI Kill Switch Act, to ensure that AI companies are able to reign in their own technology in an emergency; 2) oversight that addresses data centers' land, water, emissions, and energy footprint; and 3) a dedicated, bipartisan congressional committee on AI that can get going on regulating safety measures ranging from risks to kids and teens to industry requirements like requiring human-in-the-loop for military uses.
