Vote yes on SB4214, the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act, and strengthen it with amendments that address energy consumption directly. The bill is right to pause AI infrastructure expansion until safety frameworks exist, but Congress should also cap individual AI model power consumption at 500 watts and require energy efficiency standards as conditions for any future data center approvals.
The current bill creates the necessary breathing room to get AI governance right, but without energy guardrails, even compliant facilities could impose massive costs on the grid and on ratepayers. Tying the moratorium's eventual lift to both safety legislation and enforceable efficiency benchmarks would make the bill far more durable. A 500-watt model power cap is a concrete, measurable standard that prevents runaway consumption while still allowing meaningful AI development to continue.
