Demand Accountability for ICE Violence and Constitutional Violations
To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Casar

January 24
I am writing to demand immediate action to address the escalating constitutional crisis unfolding in our communities. Recent ICE operations, particularly in the Twin Cities, have crossed a line from law enforcement into what many are describing as military occupation. Reports indicate that ICE agents executed a civilian in cold blood, a person who was helping others. This is not immigration enforcement. This is state violence against our neighbors.
The legal framework governing refugees and asylum seekers exists for a reason. ICE, Secretary Noem, and the Trump Administration claim to be enforcing the law, but lawlessness appears to be at the core of their operations. When federal agents operate with masks and military tactics in American cities, shooting people without accountability, we have abandoned the principles enshrined in our Constitution. The first five Amendments, guarantees of due process, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, and the right to life itself, seem to no longer apply to immigrants and those who assist them.
The Declaration of Independence has not had such resonance in a long time. Our founders understood tyranny when they saw it. They understood that when government becomes destructive of the rights it was created to protect, the people have both the right and the duty to demand change. The Supreme Court's decision to grant the President immunity from prosecution has created an untouchable executive who operates above the law.
I am calling on you to take immediate action. Introduce or support legislation to defund ICE operations that violate constitutional protections. Demand a full investigation into the fatal shooting and all ICE operations in Minnesota. Support measures to restore checks and balances on executive power. Our communities deserve protection from government violence, not subjugation to it. The time for strongly worded statements has passed. I need to see concrete action to stop this descent into authoritarianism.
