The SAVE Act would severely restrict voter registration and disenfranchise millions of eligible American citizens. This harmful legislation requires voters to provide documents proving their citizenship every time they register or re-register to vote, including for routine address changes. Over 21 million Americans lack ready access to a passport, birth certificate, or other accepted documents. The burden would fall disproportionately on voters of color, married women who changed their names, and younger voters. Similar laws in Arizona and Kansas blocked tens of thousands from the rolls. The SAVE Act risks criminalizing election officials simply for doing their jobs. It would decimate mail, online, and automatic voter registration systems that millions rely on. Imposing such severe documentation requirements across all 50 states is clearly intended to suppress voter participation on a mass scale. I urge you to reject this antidemocratic bill that undermines the freedom to vote for all Americans. Our elections and our democracy will be significantly weaker if the SAVE Act becomes law.
