Protect First Amendment Rights at Delaney Hall

To: Gov. Shapiro

From: A verified voter in Bethlehem, PA

June 2

Protect First Amendment Rights at Delaney Hall What happened outside Delaney Hall in Newark demands scrutiny and accountability. Reports indicate that protesters and observers exercising their First Amendment rights were met with force by law enforcement. If peaceful demonstrators were subjected to unnecessary force, that should concern every American regardless of state lines. I urge you to publicly support a full, independent investigation into the actions taken at Delaney Hall and to communicate your concerns directly to New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill. The public deserves a clear accounting of what occurred, how decisions were made, and whether constitutional rights were violated. The conditions reported inside the facility are also deeply troubling. Detainees and advocates have raised concerns about overcrowding, inadequate climate control, food quality, access to clean water, and medical care. These allegations warrant transparent oversight and prompt investigation. The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy. Governors across the country should stand together in defense of constitutional rights, regardless of political affiliation or state boundaries. Please use your office and public platform to support accountability, protect the right to peaceful assembly, and encourage New Jersey officials to ensure that both detainees and demonstrators are treated with dignity and respect.
