Urgent: On Trump's Insurrection Act Threat & Funding
To: Sen. Warnock, Sen. Ossoff
From: A verified voter in Tybee Island, GA
January 15
I am writing to express my profound alarm at the accelerating erosion of constitutional governance and to urge you to use the full power of your offices, particularly the power of the purse, as an immediate check on executive overreach. Most recently, on January 15, the President escalated domestic political conflict by threatening to deploy the U.S. military against American citizens and state officials. On his Truth Social platform, he stated: "If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don't obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State." This threat to invoke the Insurrection Act against a state over political disputes represents a direct assault on foundational constitutional principles. Congress is now presented with a clear choice: to fund this lawlessness through a clean continuing resolution or to use its Article I authority to defend the Republic. The administration's actions demonstrate why conditional funding is a constitutional necessity: · Militarization & Lawlessness at Home: Under the banner of immigration enforcement, masked federal agents have conducted warrantless raids, used chemical agents, detained U.S. citizens without charge, and killed an innocent American, Renee Nicole Good, in Minnesota—the very state now threatened with military intervention. The administration has subsequently smeared victims and interfered with local investigations. · Dangerous Escalation Abroad: The President has proposed increasing the Department of Defense budget by roughly 50 percent. This staggering expansion is sought as the executive branch demonstrates disregard for international law, with reporting indicating prohibited military operations such as the use of aircraft disguised as civilian planes. · Weaponization of Government: The administration attempted to illegally freeze $10 billion in congressionally approved child welfare funds targeting specific states—a move promptly blocked by a federal judge. It has also retaliated against members of Congress for reminding service members of their duty to refuse illegal orders. Funding agencies that operate in this manner without condition is not compromise; it is complicity. The courts move too slowly, and federal agencies have been politicized. Congress's control over spending remains its most potent and immediate constitutional tool. Therefore, we urgently call on you to: · Refuse to pass a clean continuing resolution that would fund unconstitutional conduct. · Reject the proposed 50% increase to the Department of Defense budget. · Defund and dismantle abusive immigration enforcement operations. · Block funding for unauthorized or unlawful military actions. · Condition all appropriations on strict adherence to constitutional and statutory law. · Reassert Congress's exclusive authority over spending, war powers, and oversight. The moment requires decisive action to protect civilian life, uphold the rule of law, and stop the consolidation of unchecked executive power. The power of the purse must be used now to defend the Constitution. I refuse to message Representative Buddy Carter because his emails regurgitate Trump’s authoritarian rhetoric. I do not feel safe anymore as a citizen in his district, to email his MAGA staff and potentially be placed on an ICE list as a dissenter. Please Senators, step up and fight this nonsense. I’m worried for the America I’m raising my children in right now.
