Secure Release of Wrongfully Deported Asylum-Seeker Gutiérrez

To: Sen. King, Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree

From: A constituent in Damariscotta, ME

April 19

This disturbing case involving the wrongful arrest and deportation of 19-year-old asylum seeker Merwil Gutiérrez by ICE underscores the urgent need for a full investigation into the agency's practices and potential abuses. Despite admitting Gutiérrez was not their intended target, ICE agents detained him anyway before deporting him to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador - a facility meant for gang members which Gutiérrez has no ties to according to his family. This egregious violation of due process and human rights committed against someone fleeing instability cannot be tolerated. I demand that ICE be thoroughly investigated for such transgressions against the law and human decency, and that meaningful reforms be implemented to prevent further wrongful arrests and deportations while upholding the legal rights of all individuals. The foundations of justice and human dignity in this nation are at stake.
