I am writing to urge immediate action to address the alarming surge in anti-LGBTQ+ violence documented in GLAAD's recent extremism report published on January 27, 2026. The data reveals that June 2025 was one of the most dangerous periods for LGBTQ+ Americans in history, with 268 anti-LGBTQ+ incidents occurring in that single month, a nearly 400 percent increase compared to previous years.
Throughout 2025, GLAAD's ALERT Desk documented over 1,000 anti-LGBTQ+ incidents nationwide, including 128 acts of vandalism, 76 violent assaults, 22 threats of mass violence, and 15 arson attempts. Over half of these incidents specifically targeted transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people, representing a 10 percent increase from the previous year. These are not abstract statistics. These are your constituents facing real threats to their safety and wellbeing.
This violence is occurring alongside an unprecedented wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The American Civil Liberties Union reports that politicians proposed 616 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in 2025 alone, with 2,025 such bills submitted since 2023. These measures include censorship of LGBTQ+ books and media, bans on gender-affirming care for young people, and restrictions on Pride events.
Public opinion clearly opposes this direction. A YouGov poll from January 2026 found that 64 percent of US adults believe Republicans have a transphobia problem, with 44 percent calling it a major problem. As GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis stated, instead of growing divides that lead to violence, politicians should recognize that all Americans deserve freedom, fairness, and safety.
I urge you to publicly oppose anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, support measures that protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination and violence, and use your platform to reject the rhetoric fueling these attacks. Your constituents deserve to live without fear for their safety.
