The allegations that political appointees are interfering with SEC cases against Donald Trump’s donors and business partners are infuriating, and Congress needs to get us some answers. Please support a full investigation into these allegations, starting with calling former enforcement chief Margaret Ryan to testify publicly. Ryan, a well-respected judge who was on Trump’s Supreme Court shortlist, resigned her position after just six months. Reuters is reporting she wanted to be more aggressive in pursuing charges for fraud and other misconduct in an agency that is making history during this administration for how little they’re doing. Their abandonment of their responsibilities has disproportionately benefited companies with Trump ties. In particular, they write she clashed with his political aides over cases against his megadonor Elon Musk, with whom the SEC seems headed for a settlement, and Justin Sun, a key backer of Trump’s crypto firm and the largest holder of his meme coin, with whom they settled in early March. Former SEC officials describe a mountain of evidence that Sun committed fraud. He paid a $10 million fine for a scheme in which he made $31 million, suggesting that under Trump and Paul Atkins crime does pay if you’re in bed with the right people. Americans are fed up with this pay-to-play, rigged economy, where regular people get screwed and the wealthy and powerful get away with whatever they want. This White House which promised to drain the swamp is wallowing in it – a government of the billionaires, by the billionaires, and for the billionaires. It’s a perfect example of why we’re losing faith in our institutions. You can take action to help restore it. If Trump’s appointees are covering up for crimes by his associates, they need to be exposed and they need to be removed. We’re relying on you to do the job.
