Demand a full, independent investigation into the ICE killings of Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas, and hold the Trump administration accountable for the vetting failures that made these tragedies possible. The Maine shooting on July 13 killed a 25-year-old Colombian man. The officer involved, David Brouillette, had been accused by two ex-wives of a persistent pattern of abuse, intimidation, and violence. Even Tom Homan, the administration's own border czar, admitted Brouillette "should have never cleared vetting." This wasn't a background check that missed a minor red flag — it missed someone his ex-wife told NPR she believed was "capable of this level of violence." In Texas, ICE officers killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo after an FBI warrant described a substance in his van as consistent with methamphetamine. Lab results came back negative. It was a salt mixture construction workers use as electrolytes. Neither shooting produced body camera footage. The administration only announced a body camera policy after both men were dead. Congress must demand answers on how vetting failed so catastrophically, why no footage existed, and what accountability looks like for the officers and officials responsible.
