I am writing to demand that you take immediate action to prevent any attempt by President Trump to seize Greenland from Denmark, our NATO ally. Recent events in Venezuela, where Trump claimed the United States now "runs" the country following the toppling of Nicolás Maduro, have made what once seemed unthinkable now disturbingly plausible.
Danish officials and European security experts are now seriously contemplating scenarios where Trump could announce via Truth Social that Greenland is an American protectorate. Denmark lacks the military force to stop such an action, and this would paralyze NATO by having its leading member claim the sovereign territory of another member state. Greenland has approximately 56,000 residents whose sovereignty and self-determination would be violated by any annexation attempt, whether through force, coercion, or attempts to buy off the population with mining deals.
Congress has the constitutional authority to check executive overreach in foreign policy. The Venezuela situation demonstrates a pattern of making bold territorial and sovereignty claims without regard for international law or alliance commitments. If you fail to act now to establish clear legislative guardrails against seizing allied territory, you will have enabled the destruction of the NATO alliance that has kept Europe and North America secure for 75 years.
I expect you to publicly oppose any Greenland annexation scheme, introduce or co-sponsor legislation prohibiting the use of military force or coercive economic measures against Denmark or Greenland, and demand that the administration reaffirm its commitment to NATO Article 5 protections for all member states. The damage to our country's credibility and security architecture will be irreparable if Congress remains silent while an American president threatens to invade an ally's territory. This is your moment to demonstrate whether you will defend the international order or enable its collapse.
