I am writing as your constituent to urge you in the strongest possible terms to vote no on any legislation that weakens, repeals, or undermines Section 230 of the Communications Act.
Section 230 is a foundational protection for free expression and the modern internet. Weakening it would not “fix” the problems critics claim to address—it would instead chill lawful speech, empower frivolous lawsuits, and force platforms to censor far more aggressively to avoid liability. The result would be less speech, fewer online communities, and fewer opportunities for Americans to communicate, organize, and build businesses online.
Repealing or significantly altering Section 230 would disproportionately harm small businesses, startups, nonprofit organizations, local forums, and independent creators who cannot afford endless litigation. Large corporations may survive such changes; smaller competitors will not. This would entrench the very tech monopolies many lawmakers claim to oppose.
If Congress has concerns about specific illegal conduct online, it should address those issues directly and narrowly. Broadly dismantling Section 230 would create sweeping, unintended consequences that damage free speech and innovation across the country.
I expect you to defend the constitutional principles and economic opportunities that Section 230 supports. Please stand against reactionary proposals that threaten the open internet and vote no on any effort to weaken this essential protection.
I would appreciate a clear response outlining your position on this issue
