Consider impeaching Justice Thomas over unethical financial disclosures

To: Rep. Quigley, Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth

From: A constituent in Chicago, IL

June 8

The recent financial disclosures revealing Justice Clarence Thomas's acceptance of lavish gifts and travel from wealthy supporters raise serious ethical concerns about conflicts of interest and undermine public trust in the impartiality of the Supreme Court. As a sitting Justice, Thomas is bound by a strict Code of Conduct that requires maintaining the highest standards of integrity and avoiding even the appearance of impropriety. His failure to disclose these benefits for years suggests a concerning lack of transparency and accountability. While the gifts themselves may not directly relate to specific cases before the Court, they create the perception of undue influence and favor towards his benefactors' interests. This erodes the fundamental principle of justice being administered fairly and impartially, without regard to wealth, power or personal connections. The Supreme Court's legitimacy rests on the faith of the American people. When that faith is shaken by revelations of ethical lapses, it is incumbent upon our elected representatives to uphold the rule of law and take appropriate action to restore integrity to our judicial system. If Justice Thomas is unwilling to resign, formal impeachment proceedings should commence to fully investigate these matters and determine whether his conduct meets the constitutional standards expected of a Supreme Court Justice. The American people deserve nothing less than a Supreme Court above reproach.
