I am writing to urge you to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump for establishing an offshore account to control proceeds from Venezuelan oil sales. This arrangement represents a clear abuse of presidential power that demands immediate congressional action.
According to recent reports, the Trump administration has completed its first sale of Venezuelan oil worth $500 million and is storing these proceeds in multiple bank accounts, with the largest located in Qatar. Senior officials justify holding these funds offshore rather than in U.S. banks, claiming it provides a neutral location. However, Senator Elizabeth Warren, ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, has stated: "There is no basis in law for a president to set up an offshore account that he controls so that he can sell assets seized by the American military. That is precisely a move that a corrupt politician would be attracted to."
This arrangement becomes even more troubling given Trump's acceptance of a $400 million Boeing jet as a gift from Qatar in May, the same country now holding hundreds of millions in oil sale proceeds. The appearance of quid pro quo corruption is undeniable.
The administration gained control of Venezuelan resources after U.S. forces abducted President Nicolas Maduro on January 3 and transported him to New York to face drug trafficking charges. Trump then announced Washington would "run" Venezuela, taking control of up to 50 million barrels of oil. He signed an executive order blocking courts or creditors from impounding revenue from an estimated $170 billion owed to international stakeholders, and told ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance the U.S. would not honor past obligations because "that was their fault."
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claims his department will oversee disbursement at Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio's direction, but this provides no meaningful oversight when the President controls the accounts directly.
I urge you to support articles of impeachment addressing this corruption and to demand full transparency regarding all offshore accounts, transactions, and the President's financial relationship with Qatar.
