DHS Funding

To: Sen. Schumer, Rep. Latimer, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A constituent in Bronxville, NY

February 9

Regarding the DHS funding bill, I'd like to see the immigration-related parts (CBP, ICE, and ERO) of the bill get stripped out of it (in the way DHS was stripped from the omnibus bill) in order to allow for thoughtful reforms before funding those agencies. This would enable funding of other parts of DHS (e.g., TSA, FEMA), while working on reforms to the immigration enforcement agencies. The Democrats' ten d emands are a minimum; they must all be adopted. Requiring judicial warrants to enter private property and requiring reasonable suspicion for stops and probable cause for arrests are already established law. Requiring unmasking and visible nameplates and badges on uniforms are best practices for law enforcement officials. It is backwards to allow agents to pr eserve privacy while they are filming the faces of protestors to be sent to facial recognition databases. In addition to the ten demands, ICE funding should be reduced, especially after ICE received $75 billion to spend over 4 years in the appropriation bill passed last year.
