I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose President Trump's efforts to acquire Greenland through military force or economic coercion. This reckless pursuit threatens to destabilize our NATO alliance, damage decades of transatlantic cooperation, and potentially drag the United States into an unnecessary conflict with our closest democratic allies.
Trump has refused to rule out using military force to seize Greenland, responding only "No comment" when asked directly about military action. He has demanded the "complete and total purchase of Greenland" while wielding threats of economic warfare against European nations. Denmark has already deployed the head of the Royal Danish Army and substantial military forces to Greenland for Operation Arctic Endurance, joined by troops from Germany, Sweden, France, Norway, the Netherlands, and Finland. This European solidarity demonstrates the seriousness with which our allies view these threats.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a founding NATO member and steadfast American ally for over 75 years. Any attempt to forcibly acquire another nation's territory violates international law and the very principles NATO was established to defend. Trump's justification that Greenland is "imperative for National and World Security" does not warrant abandoning the rules-based international order that has prevented major power conflicts since World War II.
The motivation behind this push appears to be access to Greenland's mineral resources rather than legitimate security concerns. Leaked messages show NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stating he is "committed to finding a way forward on Greenland," while French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confusion about Trump's actions. These communications reveal the diplomatic chaos this pursuit has created.
I urge you to cosponsor any legislation that would prohibit funding for military action against Greenland and to speak out publicly against this dangerous escalation. Our national security depends on strong alliances, not territorial conquest.
