In Section 6 (b) of the "Executive Order Declaring A National Emergency at the Southern Border of the United States," January 20, 2025, Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 in order to obtain complete operational control. If faced with what he deems to be civil disorder, insurrection or rebellion, we fear he will invoke the Act to seek vengeance on those whom he sees as his opposition, including violently suppressing the rights of law-abiding citizens.
We call on Congress to protect our Constitutional right to peacefully assemble and protest. You must prepare now, and make it widely known, that you are ready to immediately impeach and remove any president who takes this dire step.
The Insurrection Act has no checks and balances and does not limit what actions the military may take once deployed by their Commander in Chief.
According to the Brennan Center for Justice, "The use of the military as a domestic police force represents a sharp departure from core constitutional values. ... The Insurrection Act is vague and overbroad, granting the president almost limitless discretion to use troops for domestic law enforcement."
You have seen Trump's willingness to use the military against the citizenry in Portland, Oregon and Lafayette Park, D.C. in 2020. You must stop him this time.
