An Open Letter

January 31

I am writing to you as a deeply concerned constituent who is frustrated by the growing trend of undermining our public schools in favor of homeschooling and privatization. It is time for you to take a bold stand and prioritize the future of our children by investing in our public education system—not the alternatives that are pushing an agenda that leaves behind the vast majority of students who rely on public schools to succeed. Public schools are the backbone of this nation, providing every child, regardless of their income or background, with the opportunity to receive a quality education. Yet, time and time again, we see funding cutbacks and policies that weaken public education while diverting resources to private schools and homeschooling. This is a dangerous trend. Privatizing education and pushing parents toward homeschooling creates an education system that is no longer equitable or accessible to all children. It’s a luxury that most families cannot afford and a system that often lacks accountability. Homeschooling may work for a small minority of families, but it is neither practical nor sustainable for the majority of our population. It places an unrealistic burden on parents, exacerbates existing inequalities, and strips away the benefits of social interaction and structured learning that public schools provide. Furthermore, private schools are not a solution to the problems our public schools face—especially when they are funded by diverting public tax dollars. I urge you to take immediate action to: Significantly increase federal funding for public schools, especially in underfunded and marginalized communities. Push for policies that reduce class sizes, improve teacher salaries, and ensure that every student, including those with disabilities, has access to the resources they need. Secure federal investment in school infrastructure to ensure every child learns in a safe, modern, and well-equipped environment. Protect public education by halting the expansion of private and homeschool options that only serve to deepen inequity in our educational system. Advocate for the strengthening and full support of public schools as the primary avenue for ensuring equal opportunity for all students. This is not just a request—it is a demand. The future of our children is at stake, and if we fail to invest in our public education system now, we will have failed them for generations to come. I expect you to take a firm stand and fight for our public schools in the coming legislative sessions. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I will be watching closely as you continue to serve our community, and I expect nothing less than strong, unwavering support for public education.
