Opposition on one big disastrous bill
To: Rep. Rutherford, Pres. Trump, Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott
From: A constituent in Jacksonville Beach, FL
June 10, 2025
I write to you today not with casual concern, but with deep alarm. The proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (H.R. 1 EH) is nothing short of a coordinated assault on the foundations of American democracy, human dignity, and responsible governance. If passed, this bill would not merely shift policy—it would transform the role of government itself, from one that protects and empowers its people to one that punishes, excludes, and enriches the few. At every level, this legislation erodes the democratic principles on which this country is built: • It cripples executive agencies, stripping their ability to regulate corporations, protect the environment, ensure fair access to education, and enforce consumer protections. In doing so, it weakens the checks and balances that prevent abuse of power and opens the door to unchecked corporate influence and authoritarian decision-making. • It guts social safety nets that working families depend on, imposing harsh restrictions and work requirements on food stamps, Medicaid, and education assistance—while slashing administrative support to run these programs. This is not fiscal responsibility—it is institutional sabotage targeting the poor and vulnerable. • It weaponizes immigration policy through a punitive fee structure and mass enforcement buildup. It raises costs for legal immigrants, ramps up deportations (even in absentia), and allocates staggering funds to detention infrastructure. This is not border security; it is bureaucratic cruelty designed to discourage legal migration and silence immigrant communities. • It repeals nearly every major environmental and climate initiative of the last decade, rolling back protections against air pollution, fossil fuel emissions, and environmental justice. This is not deregulation—it is willful environmental sabotage for the benefit of the fossil fuel industry, at the expense of public health, national resilience, and future generations. • It locks in and expands Trump-era tax cuts for corporations and the ultra-wealthy, while branding ideological programs like “Trump Accounts” as part of the tax code. This grotesquely distorts the purpose of tax policy and deepens inequality, offering handouts to billionaires while scapegoating low-income Americans. • And perhaps most dangerously, it reimagines government not as a force for common good, but as a tool for exclusion, control, and retribution. It centralizes power while punishing those who rely on public programs, immigrants, educators, and workers. This bill is not beautiful. It is brutal. It is not about freedom. It is about fear. It is not about making America stronger. It is about making government smaller for the people—and bigger for the powerful. I urge you in the strongest terms possible: vote NO on H.R. 1 EH. The integrity of our democracy, the well-being of our citizens, and the future of our country depend on your courage to reject this dangerous legislation.
