Immediate Action Needed: Inhumane Treatment in ICE Custody
To: Rep. Mannion, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand
From: A constituent in Syracuse, NY
February 4
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the reported treatment of Aliya Rahman by ICE agents, particularly the denial of necessary medical care and the erasure of legally required accommodations for disabilities. These actions are not only morally troubling but may also constitute serious violations of federal law and constitutional protections. This is but one of many instances that illustrates the deplorable conduct ICE demonstrates on a daily basis. Reports indicate that Ms. Rahman was denied access to appropriate medical treatment while in custody and that accommodations related to her disabilities were disregarded or removed. Denying medical care to someone in federal custody places their health and life at risk. Likewise, failing to provide reasonable accommodations for disabilities directly contradicts the protections guaranteed under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Rehabilitation Act, and basic civil rights principles. No matter an individual’s immigration status, every person in federal custody retains the right to humane treatment, access to medical care, and protection from discrimination. When ICE agents or detention facilities ignore medical needs or erase disability accommodations, they undermine the rule of law and erode public trust in our institutions. I urge you to: Call for an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into the treatment of Aliya Rahman. Demand full documentation regarding her access to medical care and disability accommodations while in custody. Strengthen oversight and accountability mechanisms for ICE and affiliated detention facilities. Ensure enforcement of ADA and Rehabilitation Act requirements within all immigration detention settings. Support policies that mandate timely medical evaluations and continuity of care for individuals in federal custody. Ensure that individuals in custody receive humane treatment across the board Guarantee access to legal representation Law Enforcement authorities must never excuse cruelty, medical neglect, or discrimination against people of all abilities. Our federal agencies are bound by the same legal and ethical standards that apply across government, and those standards must be meaningfully enforced. Please you publicly address this matter and outline what actions you will take to ensure accountability and prevent similar harm in the future. This cannot be allowed to continue. Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue. I look forward to your response.
