Immediate Action Required: Outrage Over ICE Abuses and Human Rights Violations

To: Rep. Barrett, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Hartland, MI

May 1

I am writing to you as a deeply concerned and outraged constituent who believes in the fundamental principles of justice, due process, and human dignity. Recent and ongoing reports about the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are disturbing and a direct violation of the rights and values that our nation claims to uphold. There are credible accounts of ICE collaborating with or acting like bounty hunters, detaining individuals on the streets without warrants or lawful authority. Reports continue to surface of ICE agents entering homes without judicial warrants, targeting not just undocumented immigrants but American citizens as well. These actions are not isolated incidents. They reflect a dangerous pattern of disregard for civil liberties, the Constitution, and the basic rights of all people on U.S. soil. We have seen disturbing footage and read accounts of detainees spelling out “SOS” in ICE detention centers, while journalists — those who hold power to account — are denied access. Tonight, we learned of yet another tragic death of a detainee while in ICE custody. This is not just mismanagement. This is systemic abuse. It is cruelty enacted in our name. Further, there have been multiple verified cases of American citizens being illegally detained and even deported. The fact that this is possible — that this is happening — should shake every member of Congress to their core. You have the power to stop this. You have the power to hold ICE accountable, to defund programs that violate constitutional rights, and to implement reforms that restore dignity, legality, and oversight to immigration enforcement. Silence and inaction in the face of such grave abuses is complicity. I urge you to speak out, to investigate, to legislate, and to ensure that those responsible for these actions are held accountable. I ask you to act swiftly and decisively to put an end to these human rights violations. I implore you: Do not look away. Do not wait. Do not allow this to continue under your watch.
