Elon Musk and his aides have taken alarming actions at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) that undermine democratic governance and pose serious cybersecurity risks. Career civil servants have been locked out of computer systems containing sensitive personal data on millions of federal employees. This raises major concerns about lack of oversight, potential misuse of data, and unauthorized access. Musk was appointed by the President without going through the constitutionally-mandated Senate confirmation process for agency heads. An unelected billionaire is now unilaterally reshaping a core government agency responsible for managing the federal workforce. His team is working around the clock with no accountability, sidelining experienced staff. This overstep of executive power cannot stand. I urge you to use Congress' advise and consent authority to investigate these disturbing developments at OPM. Musk's unsanctioned control over the agency's operations and vast databases jeopardizes civil service integrity and citizen privacy. Prompt oversight hearings and assertions of legislative prerogative are imperative to rein in this extreme overreach and safeguard our democratic institutions. Unchecked private influence must not be allowed to supplant longstanding processes.
