Support an Independent Epstein Investigation & Rigorous Congressional Oversight
To: Rep. Burlison, Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley
From: A constituent in Joplin, MO
October 29
I urge members of both the House and Senate, regardless of party, to support an independent, thorough investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s potential co-conspirators and allegations of Justice Department misconduct in the handling of Epstein-related investigations and records. A group of Epstein survivors and members of Virginia Giuffre’s family have publicly requested an independent special counsel (https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/epstein-survivors-doj-independent-special-counsel/). The October 26 report by House Judiciary Committee Democrats and CBS News’ October 28 reporting on gaps in released records and references to classified material (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/epstein-files-classified-material-missing-documents-suggest/) add specific questions that Congress should examine. These developments do not establish anyone’s guilt. They warrant independent investigation and a documented explanation of the government’s handling of evidence. Please use your oversight and legislative powers to: - Publicly support and press for the Justice Department’s appointment of an independent special counsel to investigate potential Epstein co-conspirators and credible allegations of criminal obstruction in the handling of Epstein-related investigations. - Conduct rigorous oversight of the Justice Department’s handling of Epstein-related investigations, records and disclosure obligations. - Seek the preservation of relevant records and lawful access to evidence, with safeguards for survivors’ privacy, due process and legitimate investigative needs. - Require the Justice Department to explain gaps identified in publicly released Epstein records, provide a legally appropriate accounting of withheld documents and the grounds for withholding them, and explain how records referencing classified material were reviewed. Investigate credible allegations that evidence was unlawfully withheld or investigative efforts were obstructed. - Support lawful cooperation with state and foreign prosecutors seeking relevant evidence. - Provide public explanations of congressional findings and actions to the extent permitted by law, without exposing survivors’ private information or compromising legitimate investigations. Survivors deserve to be treated with dignity, not used as instruments of partisan conflict. The public deserves confidence that investigative decisions are based on evidence and law rather than wealth, personal connections, or political influence. I am not asking Congress to reach a predetermined conclusion about any individual. I am asking you to help ensure that credible evidence receives independent scrutiny and that no person is shielded from accountability because of political power. Please explain what steps your office will take to support an independent investigation, protect survivors, and secure meaningful congressional oversight.
