Save America's Place In The World
To: Rep. Rose, Sen. Blackburn, Sen. Hagerty
From: A constituent in Nashville, TN
January 22
As we marked the first year of President Trump’s second term, his speech at the World Economic Forum — when compared with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s — puts everything in perspective. It tells us how far the United States has fallen and how a new world order will go on without us. America will suffer. The rest of the world will do just fine. Carney’s speech was full of specifics. It was insightful, well thought out, and unambiguous. Canada and the other “middle powers,” as he called them, will form alliances with each other. They will no longer depend on us, and we will be weaker both economically and geopolitically. We will become as irrelevant as the United Kingdom after the fall of their empire on which the sun never set. It sure sets now, just as it will set on us if we continue on our current path. Trump’s speech wasn’t so much a speech as, per usual, a laundry list of grievances. He proved he knows nothing about NATO or even foreign policy, embarrassing himself and our country. Where Carney was mature and cogent, Trump was juvenile and petty. Carney presented a vision for the future. Trump dwelled on the past and showed all the gravitas of a prankster schoolboy. The contrast made it clear. Trump isn’t the leader of the free world. Carney might well be. Our allies are not only reconsidering their positions, they are fine tuning their responses if the United States attacks them because Mr. Trump saw a mean meme in the middle of the night. Their responses likely won’t include military force, but they can pretty easily break us financially. And if we leave or are forced out of NATO, we will lose all our military bases in Europe and many elsewhere, like Diego Garcia. We will no longer be a superpower. We will be a middle power. The sooner we rid ourselves of our ailing, childish, and ever more demented president, the less work we will have to do to reclaim some standing in the world. But even if he left office tomorrow, it may take decades to rebuild the world’s respect. And longer to regain their trust. I understand that, as a Republican politician, you have to keep your base happy. You know he has to go, but voting to impeach and convict him might mean you don’t get elected ever again. That seems like a small price to pay if you save your country in the process. Deep inside, you know it's the right thing to do. If you can’t find the backbone to do so, I urge you to work behind the scenes to convince the Vice President and cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment immediately. America can’t withstand another three years of this. As the world order changes — without our input — we get weaker on the world stage by the day. We must change course as soon as possible and the only way to do that is to remove Donald Trump from office.
