Stop militarization of policing, protect civil liberties from drones

To: Pres. Trump, Rep. Carey, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted

August 17

The deployment of military drones like the MQ-9 Reaper for surveillance over U.S. cities raises significant civil liberties concerns. While authorities claim the drones lack facial recognition capabilities and are not monitoring First Amendment activities, their very presence has a chilling effect on freedoms of speech and assembly. Domestic use of military-grade technology represents a dangerous escalation of police militarization. I urge an immediate cessation of drone surveillance over American cities and a thorough review of policies allowing such troubling overreach. We must strike a proper balance between public safety and constitutional rights, prioritizing proven community-based approaches over tools of warfare turned inward.
