I am writing to express my strong opposition to any effort to reinstate or expand a military draft requiring young men to serve.
While I deeply respect those who choose to serve in the armed forces, I believe that compulsory service raises serious ethical, personal, and societal concerns. Forcing individuals—particularly young people who are just beginning to build their lives—into military service removes their autonomy at a critical stage of development. Decisions about risking one’s life should be made voluntarily, not mandated by the government.
A draft also disproportionately impacts those with fewer resources or alternatives, raising concerns about fairness and equity. In a modern society that values individual rights and informed choice, compulsory service feels inconsistent with those principles.
Additionally, today’s military is highly specialized and technologically advanced. A voluntary, well-trained force is more effective than one composed of individuals who may be unwilling or unprepared to serve. Strengthening recruitment through support, education, and benefits is a more ethical and practical approach than enforcing participation.
I urge you to oppose any legislation that would reinstate or expand the draft and instead focus on policies that respect personal freedom while supporting those who willingly choose to serve.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
