Today, I am sitting at my desk, afraid to look at my 401K, praying my job survives the economic calamity unfolding, and that the house I have owned for 7 months is safe and secure, and then I heard this: “Consumers are saying, 'If these tariffs are gonna hit, I better not go on that vacation to see Grandma. I better not buy that new car. I better not, you know, upgrade the groceries I'm buying.'" -Chuck Schumer Millions of us are fearing financial ruin and the complete destruction of our American values and institutions, and then best our Democratic leadership can come up with is a quote about upgrading groceries? You are failing this moment. You are not matching the energy of the five million people who took to the streets to defend our way of life on Saturday. You are not the leadership we need at this moment. I am calling on you to dig deep to find out why you wanted to represent me in Congress. And be the leadership we need in this moment. Fight for us. Throw decorum out the window. If you can’t do more than make folksy quotes about grandma and groceries I do not trust you to protect my livelihood or my right to pursue happiness. I am demanding that you do something to meet this moment. “Our hands are tied” is no longer an excuse. Look at what your colleague Mr Booker accomplished last week. Look at the people in the streets on Saturday. Now is the time for you to figure out how to lead in this moment and be the congressperson American democracy needs now. This nation was built on average people throwing tea into the harbor simply to be a disruption and thorn in the side to the unacceptable treatment from the people in power. It’s time for you to start tossing boxes.
