Uphold constitutional separation of church and state

To: Rep. McBride, Pres. Trump, Sen. Blunt Rochester, Sen. Coons

From: A constituent in Newark, DE

April 15

The recent executive orders from the Trump administration raise serious concerns about maintaining the separation of church and state, a fundamental principle enshrined in the First Amendment. Establishing a task force to address perceived "anti-Christian bias" within the federal government is a misguided and divisive approach that risks favoring one religious group over others, undermining religious pluralism. Moreover, reinstating a Faith Office in the White House blurs the line between religious institutions and government, potentially compromising the autonomy of faith-based organizations. The government should not be in the business of facilitating the work of religious groups, as this can lead to the endorsement of specific beliefs and practices, violating the Establishment Clause. It is crucial to uphold the principle of separation of church and state, which has served as a bulwark against religious persecution and ensured freedom of belief for all Americans. The government must maintain neutrality towards religion, neither favoring nor disfavoring any particular faith tradition. These executive orders threaten to erode this essential constitutional protection, potentially leading to the marginalization of minority religious groups and non-believers. To preserve the integrity of our democratic system and safeguard the fundamental rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations or lack thereof, it is imperative to maintain a strict separation between religious institutions and the functions of the state. The government should focus on serving the interests of all Americans, without preference for any specific religious ideology.
