Your support for the Lankford-Walberg brief in St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy is wrong, and I'm asking you to reverse course. Public dollars should serve every eligible child — not fund schools that turn away four-year-olds because of who their parents are. Colorado voters approved a universal preschool program in 2020. The rule is simple: take public money, follow public nondiscrimination rules. More than 40 faith-based providers, including six Catholic Charities preschools within the Denver Archdiocese itself, participated in the first year without issue. Schools can still teach their faith. What they cannot do is reject an eligible child with public funds while doing it. As Sen. Baldwin put it: "If you want to get taxpayer dollars to educate our kids, you cannot discriminate against them or their parents for who they are or who they love." That's not a partisan position — it's the basic condition of accepting a government contract. The Supreme Court hears arguments November 3. There is still time to withdraw from that brief and stand on the right side of this. Public funds are for the public good — all of it.
