Six months after Israel began blocking food, water, formula, sanitary products, and medical equipment, the UN-backed global hunger monitor, the IPC, has declared Gaza City and the surrounding areas in Phase 5 famine, the most severe level of food insecurity. Conditions are spreading rapidly across the enclave. This marks the first time famine has been declared outside of Africa in the IPC’s history. Over 514,000 people are already in famine conditions, with that number projected to reach 641,000 by the end of September 2025. “Famine is not only about food; it is the deliberate collapse of the systems needed for human survival. People are starving. Children are dying. And those with the duty to act are failing.” — UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Israel has systematically destroyed Gaza’s ability to sustain life. Over 80% of water infrastructure has been destroyed, forcing families to drink contaminated water that fuels disease and worsens malnutrition. Farmland has been razed, bakeries, kitchens, and aid convoys bombed, and medical facilities starved of supplies. This famine is entirely preventable — it is engineered, not natural. Amnesty International has confirmed: “This famine is the direct consequence of Israel’s deliberate campaign of starvation in Gaza. The deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid, the destruction of life-sustaining infrastructure, and the direct killings of civilians are a clear manifestation of how Israel is inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians in Gaza as part of its ongoing genocide.” You have a legal obligation to prevent genocide. Every credible human rights body has already stated the truth: Israel is committing genocide. I urge you to: Impose full, comprehensive sanctions on Israel. Enforce a complete two-way trade embargo—ending all import and export activity with Israel. Immediately end all arms sales and intelligence cooperation. Ensure unimpeded access for aid and humanitarian organisations, and suspend GHF’s deadly “aid” sites.
